· Lithium is used to treat the manic episodes of manic depression - hyperactivity, rushed speech, poor judgment and aggression
A number of chemical salts of lithium are used medically as a mood stabilizing drug, primarily in the treatment of bipolar disorder, where they have a role in the treatment of depression and particularly of mania, both acutely and in the long term. As a mood stabilizer, lithium is probably more effective in preventing mania than depression, and may reduce the risk of suicide in certain bipolar patients
Other Uses

  • lithium stearate is mixed with oils to make all-purpose and high-temperature lubricants

  • lithium is sometimes used as battery anode material (high electrochemical potential) and lithium compounds are used in dry cells and storage batteries
  • lithium is used in the manufacture of special high strength glasses and ceramics

Interesting Facts
  • lithium hydroxide is used to absorb carbon dioxide in space vehicles
  • Lithium is in many stars
